Our teeth are very strong and durable. But over time, stains can build up on the enamel. This is because our enamel is full of tiny pores. Habits like drinking coffee, wine, or tea regularly can cause compounds called “tannins” to stick to these pores. Tobacco use can also cause pigments to become absorbed into the pores of your teeth. Over time, this means that your teeth can become stained, yellowed, and discolored.

Teeth whitening is the best way to remove surface stains from your teeth. All teeth whitening products use the same active ingredient, known as a “peroxide.” Peroxides such as hydrogen peroxide and carbamide peroxide contain powerful oxygen molecules. When these molecules contact stains on your enamel, they break the bonds that hold the stain onto your enamel. In turn, this “bleaches” the stain away, and restores the natural color of your teeth.
At our office, we offer customized, professional take-home teeth whitening kits. The treatment begins with a fitting for whitening trays. your doctor will take impressions of your teeth, and send them to a dental lab, where they will create a set of plastic whitening trays that fit onto your teeth perfectly.
After your trays arrive, you’ll come back to pick them up, and you’ll also get a set of whitening products and instructions for using your take-home kit. Usually, you’ll whiten your teeth for about an hour per day over a period of 2-3 weeks, though this depends on your desired results.
By the time your treatment is over, your smile will look bright and beautiful once again. In addition, because your teeth will gradually become whiter over a period of a few weeks, this treatment is more subtle than an in-office whitening treatment, which some patients prefer.
The best benefit of teeth whitening is that you’ll feel good about your smile again. You won’t have to avoid doing things like smiling, laughing, or eating in public due to embarrassment or self-consciousness about tooth stains. Teeth whitening is also very affordable and completely non-invasive, which makes it suitable for just about any patient interested in cosmetic dentistry. To begin the take-home teeth whitening process, you’ll need to come and visit Clermont Family Dentistry for a consultation with Dr. Mundi Buechele. Dr. Buechele will examine your mouth and discuss your options for cosmetic dentistry, including teeth whitening, and help you decide which treatment is right for you.
If you decide to have your teeth whitened, Dr. Buechele will also take impressions of your teeth using dental putty and trays. These molds will be sent to our partner dental lab. At the lab, a technician will use the impressions to create a set of custom-fitted whitening trays.
These reusable whitening trays will be built to fit perfectly over your teeth. This ensures the best possible results. Unlike over-the-counter whitening trays, which are built in a “one-size-fits-all” design, custom trays match the curves, grooves, and surfaces of your teeth to provide better contact with the whitening compound.
Once your trays arrive at Clermont Family Dentistry, you will come back to pick them up. Along with your trays, Dr. Buechele will give you a set of whitening products, which are specifically picked based on your desired level of whiteness. He’ll also give you instructions on how to whiten your teeth.
Then, you’ll be sent home to begin your whitening treatment. The specifics may vary based on your case, but Dr. Buechele usually recommends that you whiten your teeth for about an hour per day. This provides plenty of time for the peroxide whitener to brighten your teeth, but also minimizes tooth sensitivity.
The overall length of your treatment primarily depends on how bright you’d like your smile to be, and the initial level of staining before your treatment. Most people whiten their teeth at home for about 3-4 weeks.
The results of take-home whitening are just as dramatic as in-office whitening. Once your treatment is complete, you’ll usually have a smile that’s 5-10 shades brighter. You will be able to smile confidently and feel good about your teeth once again, without worrying about stains, yellowing, or discoloration.
What are my options for teeth whitening?
With teeth whitening, patients can choose our at-home whitening. We will take molds of your teeth and supply you with custom molds as well as professional grade whitening solution. Simply apply a thin layer of gel to the trays and wear them as directed each day. Most patients notice a difference in 10 to 14 days, and the full impact will appear at the end of the whitening time period.
Does teeth whitening work?
Professional teeth whitening can safely and effectively remove surface stains and renew your smile. Teeth whitening products can lighten your teeth 10 to 12 shades in no time. Good oral hygiene, regular dental visits, and avoidance of products that stain will keep your smile looking fantastic.
What is the difference between professional teeth whitening and the kits I can buy from the drug store?
Drug store whitening kits don’t have the strength that professional grade whitening provides, so many times, patients won’t achieve the results they desire. As well, these whitening kits often irritate gums and soft tissue because they aren’t customized to fit your mouth.
What if teeth whitening won’t work?
In some cases, especially where deep intrinsic stains exist, teeth whitening may not be the best option. We will review your case and can recommend other alternatives, like porcelain veneers or cosmetic crowns, if teeth whitening doesn’t fit your situation.

Many dentists consider teeth bleaching the safest cosmetic procedure available today. With careful supervision, you can lighten your teeth up to 10 shades and take years off your appearance.
What about side effects?
Some patients develop mild sensitivity after whitening. Time and toothpaste that alleviates this sensation will help minimize any discomfort you feel.
How Long Does It Take To See My Results?
You will likely start to see some visible results after about a week of take-home whitening treatment. And, as mentioned, most patients need to whiten their teeth for about 3-4 weeks. This is when you’ll see the full results of your treatment.
In comparison, in-office treatment usually takes 1-2 whitening sessions of about 30-60 minutes each to deliver similar results. However, take-home treatment does have some big benefits compared to in-office treatment.
First, the more gradual whitening makes it less obvious that you’ve had your teeth whitened, which some patients may prefer. It also means you’re less likely to experience severe sensitivity, which may be very beneficial if you already have very sensitive teeth before beginning your treatment.
