Clermont Tooth Extractions

Why Would I Need A Tooth Extraction?

Tooth extractions are often recommended for wisdom teeth that are not growing into your mouth properly. Tooth extraction may also be recommended if you have one or more teeth that have been irreversibly damaged by gum disease or tooth decay. In these cases, tooth extractions are a last resort. It’s always a better option to save the natural tooth, if possible. In some cases, though, this is not possible, so an extraction is recommended.

Tooth extractions may also be required for patients who are getting dentures, dental implants, or similar restorative treatments. In some cases, tooth extraction may even be necessary for orthodontic purposes.

Do My Wisdom Teeth Need To Be Extracted?

The wisdom teeth are our last set of molars. Unlike our other teeth, they come in much later. Typically, they erupt around between ages 17-25. However, by this age many people lack the room in their mouths that is necessary to accommodate another set of 4 teeth.

If you do not have space in your mouth for your wisdom teeth, they may grow into your mouth improperly, move your other teeth, and cause other complications. If you or your child have wisdom teeth growing in, schedule an appointment with Dr. Buechele today to see if they need to be removed.

How Does The Tooth Extraction Process Work?

At our office, we offer basic tooth extractions for erupted teeth. If you require a surgical extraction for an impacted or unerupted tooth, we will refer you to an oral surgeon.

First, Dr. Buechele will clean and numb the extraction site. You can also be sedated to ensure you feel completely comfortable. Then, he will begin wiggling your tooth loose in the socket using a tool called a “dental elevator.”

Once your tooth has been loosened sufficiently, he will grasp it with a dental forceps, then pull it out by the root. The area will then be disinfected, cleaned and sutured shut.

How Long Does It Take To Heal From A Tooth Extraction?

Initial recovery takes a few days, and you may experience some bruising, bleeding, and discomfort around the extraction site. You will need to take steps to avoid dislodging the blood clot that forms in your socket, such as avoiding the use of straws and spitting forcefully. After about a week, your mouth will feel mostly normal, and most patients are completely symptom-free within 2 weeks. Dr. Buechele will give you a set of recovery instructions to follow to ensure that you heal rapidly.
